Have you been to a record store lately? Have your kids never been to a record store? Regardless, you won’t find a better excuse to swing through your local record store than Saturday, April 21st…Record Store Day. Every April since 2008 independent record stores around the world have participated “as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally.”

On Record Store Day there are special CD and vinyl releases and unique promotional items made exclusively for the day. This link provides an alphabetical list of each special release for the day. Although it is completely up to each independent store what they carry and how they participate in the day, you might find festivities like “performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on.”

After scanning through this year’s list, a couple albums caught our attention. We don’t know about you, but we would love to get ahold of the five LP 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition of Johnny Cash’s At Folsom Prison. This year’s list of Record Store Day releases spans hundreds of albums covering music to suit just about any taste so you’re sure to find a Record Store Day exclusive or first time release that your family will be excited to bring home.

You can use this link to find record stores in your area that are participating in Record Store Day. We sure hope that there’s a record store in your area and that you’ll take the opportunity to take your family for a unique experience and an opportunity to explore and possibly support the culture of independent record stores. We’ll be rounding up the family for a Band Together field trip and hope you will too.

You can find more about Record Store Day at www.RecordStoreDay.com and on Facebook, instagram, and Twitter.
